The Forum on Law, Culture & Society is an academic gathering at Fordham Law that is interested in bringing together people that have knowledge and interest in the cross-section of law and culture. They are particularly focused on law in the media. The law is permeating journalism, television, movies, and many other popular culture aspects. The Forum is all about the study of how the law is being represented in all of these aspects. Annually, a film festival is held that takes a look at films that have taken the law as their themes and content.
In 2010 the fifth film festival was held in New York City and was open to the public for free. Anyone interested in law in documentary, current film, television, classic film and classic television was invited to watch and discuss six night worth of films. It was a celebration of the legal system in all its dilemmas, triumphs, drama, and even humor at times. One movie is shown each night with a discussion following. Local and national personalities like actors, artists, writers, legal professionals, and intellectuals joined together to discuss the ramifications of the legal system as portrayed by the media.
Guests have included Supreme Court justices, Pulitzer Prize winners, Emmy award winners, Oscar winners, authors, political leaders, and journalists. The Forum continues to offer ongoing speakers and screenings in order to keep the conversation going. The film festival is just one way to keep the conversation alive and growing. The Forum website is a great way to keep up with the events that are being offered on a regular basis in New York City. The town hall setting of the conversations welcomes all comments and discussion from the public as well as the visiting experts.
Fordham Law School is the sponsor of the Forum and its conversations and the film festival. Fordham is one of the top ten law schools in the nation. They are leaders in the study of American law and of training students to participate in the field of law in meaningful ways. It is a very selective school that is in the heart of New York City with all its diversity and opportunity for legal engagement. Students graduating from Fordham work in the top 25 law firms in the nation and enjoy a high level of academic study, practice as a student, and one of the best law educations in the world.
