Transmissions constitute an essential part of a car. They are responsible for running a car. They are connected to the engine and makes sure that the engine turns in sync with the wheels. Regardless of which gear the vehicle is in, transmissions make sure that the engine turns in time with the wheels. It is a common part of an automobile that is often neglected unless it starts malfunctioning.

Transmissions are an integral part of an engine that joins the engine with the wheels. Their mechanism is as such that the power produced by the engine is distributed to the wheels. As the engine functions at an optimum RPM, i.e., revolutions per minute, a level of accuracy is required to be maintained while the power is transferred. They are accountable for shifting to next gear as the speed fluctuates.

Errors and problems in transmissions are pretty complex. They require expert technical support, time and labor. Without proper functioning of this auto part, a car would not be able to operate. The two most common types of transmissions are discussed as follows:

Manual Transmissions:

This is the oldest form of transmission in a car. This type comprises of a stick and clutch attached to the transmission and gears. A driver has to use a hand stick or a gear shift or a foot pedal in order to engage the clutch and thereby manually shift between the gears. Inexperienced driving and misuse often leads to malfunctioning of manual transmission. One of the most common issues with this type is clutch slip and failure. The friction plates inside the clutch get worked up as a result of which the clutch cannot allow shifting of gears. Another issue with this type of transmissions is the stick ball. The small ball that is located in the area where the gear shift gets connected with the clutch, can wear down. This can cause misalignment in the mechanism of gear-shifting.

Automatic transmissions:

This type of transmissions allows all the shifting to be done automatically. Such system can sense when to shift gears. Generally automatic transmissions failure cause more severe repercussions as compared to manual transmissions.

A very common issue that one faces in transmissions of automobiles is due to using the wrong fluid and/ or having the wrong fluid level. Having a too low fluid level can mess up the lubrication. Too high fluid level can flood the transmissions.
